Ukulele Tuning Guide

Standard soprano, concert, and tenor ukuleles are tuned to G4, C4, E4, A4 (known as C Tuning). Notably, the 4th string (G4) is tuned higher than the 3rd string (C4) and 2nd string (E4). This is called a re-entrant scale, which gives the ukulele its signature bright, jangly tone.

How to Tune Your Ukulele

1. Choose standard C Tuning (GCEA) or Baritone D Tuning (DGBE) and click Start Tuner.
2. Pluck a single ukulele string. Let it ring out clearly. Make sure other strings are quiet.
3. Use Auto Detect to automatically identify the plucked string, or switch to Manual Select to lock the tuner to a specific string to tune it from very flat/sharp states.

Alternative Ukulele Tunings

  • D Tuning (A4, D4, F#4, B4): Transposes the entire instrument up by a whole step. This tuning was popular during the early 20th century vaudeville era and sounds slightly brighter.
  • Baritone Tuning (D3, G3, B3, E4): Used on larger baritone ukuleles. It is a linear tuning (the strings go lowest to highest in pitch) and matches the exact tuning of the top four strings of a standard guitar, giving the instrument a deeper, warmer sound.
